AbaThembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, has provided a lifeline for the students at King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College students by donating a cow.

The cow was slaughtered to feed the hungry students, who have gone months without proper meals in the wake of the ongoing NSFAS woes.

Destitute students at the college say they have not received meal allowances from NSFAS in the past three months, forcing them to study and go to bed on empty stomachs.

Students at the college took to the streets last week over the recurring issue of delayed allowances.

This resulted in the injury of several students during a clash with police.

iNkosi Minenkulu Joyi, who serves under the Under Abathembu King, says the king made this offering through his compassion and understanding that these students are people from deprived rural areas.

Joyi says the king has committed to keeping a close eye on the college that was named after his father and assists where he can.

“Let us understand that in the current era, resources may be limited to amaKhosi but the least he could offer he saw best to contribute as the AbaThembu King.”

NSFAS has since been placed under administration and its board dissolved.

Former SAICA head, Freeman Nomvalo, has been appointed to spearhead the financial aid scheme.

A move that some students have labelled as a political decoy by the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande.
