Old Mutual saga tip of the iceberg?

Reputation Management Specialist, Dominik Heil, says the  Old Mutual saga has exposed a broader discontent within the insurance company.

His remarks comes after the insurance company apologised to South Africans over how it handled its fallout with a client who had dragged it on social media.

Sebabatso Molefi put the company on blast after it refused to pay her mother’s pension fund, despite a court order.
Heil says the incident was just the tip of the iceberg.
“What we are seeing here with the social media outrage, this is a bigger problem, this is not just an Old Mutual problem, it’s an industry problem.
“As you can see, lots of people on social media were saying, once you are done with Old Mutual, cancel your other products even at banks, etc.”
Heil says it is important for companies to live up to their values.
“A stronger upfront apology from Old Mutual could have been beneficial.”
In a statement, Old Mutual says the company has reached a settlement deal with Molefi following a meeting with her lawyers.
Molefi has also taken to X to share her victory.
“This isn’t about only mama anymore, It’s about Our parents. Our grandparents. Aluta continua.”
Some South Africans are, however, still upset about the situation, which gave rise to #OldMutualMustFall.
This while others continue to share their heartbreaking stories.
