A patriotic citizen stood up against the staff members of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria for neglecting a dying patient,

In a video making the rounds on social media, a 28-year-old male patient can be seen laying on the passage floor, while another woman keeps reprimanding and demanding that the nurses attend to the man who seemed to be running out of breath.

 The patient subsequently passed away.

Five nurses have been placed on precautionary suspension at the hospital as investigation into negligence gets underway.

Gauteng Education Spokesperson, Motaletale Modiba, says counselling services have been offered to the affected family.

He says facility management is also strengthening the working relations with organised labour within the facility.

“The unfortunate incident happens at the time when the Steve Biko hospital is strengthening interventions to improve patients’ experience of care.

“Those measures include the launch of the Gauteng Department of Health’s I Serve with A Smile Campaign which is a change management programme aimed at improving staff attitude and quality of services.”

Last year alone, Gauteng recorded 7 143 avoidable incidents resulting in soaring claims of medical negligence.

This was an increase from the 6 910 avoidable incidents recorded in the 2021/2022 financial year.

This latest incident has exacerbated fears, in some quarters, about the suitability of the NHI system in the country wit. They believe the system will lead to decreased quality of healthcare at private health facilities as all South Africans, under NHI, will have access to services at both the private and public sectors.
