The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, has encouraged South Africans to rally behind Bafana Bafana.

The country’s national team will cross swords with Nigeria in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals on Wednesday (7 February) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Bafana earned their spot in the last four in the early hours of Sunday morning after beating Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties.

This is the first time that Bafana qualifies in the semi-finals in 24 years.

Minister Kodwa says Bafana Bafana have been excellent ambassadors for South Africa and have proudly raised the country’s flag high.

He says the team has risen from past disappointments.

“They have broken records by keeping four clean sheets in the tournament.

“The heroics of the Bafana Bafana players during the tournament, including the feats of captain Ronwen Williams in the quarterfinals, will live long in the memories of football supporters.”

South Africans have expressed their support for the national team on social media.
