DA leader, John Steenhuisen, has come under fire over his utterances degrading the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens.
In a swipe at Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, Steenhuisen over the weekend the wardens, established to fight crime in Gauteng, as Panyaza’s untrained vigilantes.
“What kind of person pulls a drunkard out of a shebeen, gives him a uniform and a weapon, and then unleashes them onto a community?”
He alleges that Lesufi used taxpayers’ money to buy ill-fitting PEP stores uniforms for the wardens.

Steenhuisen made the remarks at a crime awareness rally he led outside the Soshanguve Police Station.
In December, the Justice department conferred the wardens with peace officer powers. They assume the same legal status as Gauteng provincial traffic officers.
The men and women in green were appointed in July last year in a bid to assist in combating crime in the province.
Political analyst, Levy Ndou, says Steenhuisen’s comments compromise the DA brand as they create the impression that he does not see the value in ensuring the safety of Gauteng citizens.
“He doesn’t appreciate the job creation initiatives that are being made by the premier and his government.”
Dismissing claims by some South Africans that Steenhuisen was being racist, Ndou says the DA leader’s actions were distasteful, especially ahead of a crucial election in the coming months.
