The 51-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man accused of brutally killing his mother and sister has abandoned his bail bid and will remain behind bars until next year.

Elias Mkhize made his first appearance at the Richmond Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing charges of murder and the possession of an illegal firearm.

It is understood that Mkhize shot the victims in the Mid-Illovo area on Wednesday, before beheading them. He then stashed their heads inside a pit latrine.

According to information at hand, a 12-year-old girl witnessed the crime.  She escaped and alerted neighbours, who then alerted the authorities.

Mkhize refused legal representation, saying that he will represent himself.

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, says the motive behind the murders is not yet known.

eMkhabathini mayor, Nhlakanipho Ntombela, says the 12-year-old eyewitness is traumatised.

The case has been postponed to the 25th of January for further investigations.
