Police are investigating the gruesome killing of a Grade 7 pupil in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.
The pupil from from Echibini Junior Secondary School was raped and strangled to death on Sunday night.
It is alleged that the perpetrator broke into the pupil’s home, while the learner’s family was sleeping and attacked her.
According to the department, the pupil’s parents were sleeping in a separate room when the incident took place.
The deceased pupil was only discovered the next morning.
The Gauteng Department of Education has extended its condolences to the learner’s family and school community.
MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, says he remains hopeful that law enforcement authorities will work speedily to bring the perpetrator to book.
The incident comes a few days after the country wrapped up its 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.
The latest crime statistics reveal that children have not been spared from the brutal attacks and abuse.
According to the stats, 293 children were killed between July to September this year.
In the same period, 361 incidents of attempted murder and 1 820 of Assault with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm were perpetrated against children.
