The body of a missing 18-year-old teenager, who drowned in the Klipvalley River in Soweto, has been recovered after a frantic search on Wednesday.
It is reported the teenager slipped and fell while trying to get across the overflowing river in Kliptown on Tuesday afternoon.
Search and recovery operations commenced on Tuesday afternoon and picked up again at 08h00 am on Wednesday.
Emergency Services’ spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, says his body will be handed over to police for further investigation.
The tragedy follows the unusual hail and heavy rains that took Johannesburg by storm on Monday.
Several cars, homes and infrastructure were damaged in the heavy rains, which also led to the overflowing of river streams.
Affected areas included Soweto, Sandton and Midrand.
Mulaudzi has urged residents to avoid crossing rivers during the rainy season.
“Our message to residents is that, we have been receiving a lot of rainfall throughout the City of Johannesburg, the water levels are much higher now, young kids will be tempted to play near the river streams and they might drown.”
