The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has thrown its weight behind Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy’s, proposal to introduce a stricter zero percent blood alcohol limit for drivers.

The proposed amendment to Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act would effectively mean that no alcohol would be permitted in a driver’s system while driving on public roads.

MISA CEO, Martlé Keyter, says the move would send a clear message that alcohol and driving should not mix.

“This initiative is not only about compliance but is about protecting families, workers and communities,” Keyter said.

Under the current law, ordinary drivers may not exceed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 grams per 100 millilitres, while the limit for professional drivers is 0.02 grams.

Speaking at the Road Safety Practitioners Colloquium in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, Creecy said government was working to secure the necessary approvals before seeking Cabinet’s support for the amendment by the end of the year.

Creecy said more than 18,000 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol between March and the end of August. She also warned that nearly 12,000 people die on South African roads every year.

Between 1 January and 23 August, 6,477 road deaths were recorded, a 9% decrease compared with 2025. The Minister highlighted that Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of fatalities during that period.

MISA spokesperson, Phakamile Majola, stressed that the zero-alcohol policy is not yet law.

“While the policy may not be enforced this year, the process to amend the legislation has officially begun,” MISA said.

The proposal will still have to go through Parliament and a public participation process before it can be formally implemented.
