Broos closes Bafana chapter

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the departure of Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, after a 5-year stint with the national team.

The Belgian leaves on a high after guiding Bafana to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history at this year’s FIFA World Cup.

He also led Bafana to two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications, including a bronze-medal finish at the 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

Broos fought back tears as he addressed the media, bringing months of speculation over his future to an end.

The veteran coach revealed that spending long periods away from his family ultimately influenced his decision not to extend his stay with the national team.

“My long absence from my family and lonely moments in South Africa have led me to make this difficult decision,” Broos said.

“Qualifying for the World Cup 40 years after my participation with the Belgium national team as a player in 1986 brought everything full circle, and that’s why I will not be extending my contract with Bafana Bafana,” he added.
