Ramaphosa sets 4 November for high-stakes local elections

South Africans will head to the polls on 4 November 2026, after President Cyril Ramaphosa officially announced the date during a Presidential Coordinating Council meeting in Ekurhuleni.

The announcement follows consultations with Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa, and falls within the constitutionally prescribed window between November 2026 and January 2027.

Hlabisa said the date avoids clashes with the festive season and the January back-to-school period, making it the earliest practical option.

The 2026 local government elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with coalition politics likely to remain a defining feature, particularly in major metros.

The ANC continues to face pressure in key urban centres, with Johannesburg and other Gauteng metros shaping up as critical battlegrounds amid ongoing concerns over service delivery, infrastructure decline, and water shortages.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has already begun preparations, urging eligible voters to register or update their details. The first voter registration weekend is scheduled for 20 and 21 June 2026.

Online registration is currently open through the IEC’s official platforms, while Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, has emphasised the importance of registering in the correct voting district.

The upcoming vote will determine leadership across municipalities nationwide, shaping local governance and service delivery for years to come, as political parties gear up for what is expected to be a closely contested election.
