Kaizer Chiefs captain, Brandon Petersen, says he is relishing the opportunity to lead from the front when Amakhosi face Orlando Pirates in Sunday’s sold-out Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium.

The goalkeeper, who has been instrumental in Chiefs’ resurgence this season, was forced to watch from hospital when his side suffered a 3-0 defeat to their bitter rivals in February due to illness – a result that still serves as motivation ahead of the reverse fixture.

“Obviously, it was disappointing that I couldn’t be part of the first derby, and obviously the disappointing result as well,” Petersen said.

Now back to full fitness, the goalkeeper heads into the clash with confidence, having registered 13 clean sheets while conceding just nine goals in 19 league appearances this season.

“This time around, I don’t think there’s added pressure. The stakes are high, obviously, but it’s an exciting game. Everyone is motivated, like the coach said earlier, the physio room is empty, and everyone wants to play,” he explained.

“For me, it’s an opportunity for everyone to go out there, enjoy the occasion, and also show what you are capable of.”

Kick off is at 3pm on Sunday.
