As Gauteng prepares for the Easter long weekend from Friday, motorists can expect congested roads, increased law enforcement visibility and changing weather conditions.

Heavy traffic volumes are expected across the province, especially for those long-distance travellers.

The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), which manages more than 400km of the key route between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, has urged motorists to adopt a risk management approach to travel during the Easter period.

“A risk management approach borrows from disciplines such as engineering and occupational safety, where hazards are systematically identified, assessed, prioritised and controlled,” Thaania Dhoogra, Chief Operating Officer of N3TC said.

Traffic is expected to build from midday on Thursday, particularly southbound towards KwaZulu-Natal, with peak volumes continuing into Friday.

Northbound direction towards Gauteng is expected to spike on Monday as holidaymakers return home.

Increased law enforcement

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will roll out intensified operations across the city.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, says motorists should expect 24-hour roadblocks, strict enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations.

He added that high-density areas, including the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding townships, will see increased patrols to manage traffic and prevent accidents.

Alcohol remains a leading cause of road fatalities, and the JMPD has warned that reckless driving and driving under the influence will be heavily targeted.

“JMPD will conduct inspections at liquor outlets to ensure strict adherence to licensing hours. Unauthorised street parties and “bashes” that disrupt public peace or block roads will be shut down immediately,” Fihla stressed.

Travel delays and key routes

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has warned motorists to expect delays due to congestion.

“Our law enforcement and authorities will be deployed on major roads. The R21, N3, N12 both directions, N17 both directions. Just to make sure that traffic flows and ensure compliance with road safety regulations throughout the Easter period,” said DEMS spokesperson Erik Maloka.

Weather outlook and driving conditions

While no major warnings have been issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), changing conditions – including possible rain – could affect travel.

Gauteng is expected to have partly cloudy conditions over the Easter weekend, with clearer skies forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Motorists are urged to adjust their driving in wet conditions by reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance and using headlights to improve visibility.
