Logistical challenges have delayed sentencing proceedings in the murder trial of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.
The court had been expected to hear testimony from the child’s father, Elie Challita, as part of evidence in aggravation of sentence against convicted killer Amber Lee Hughes – a key stage that could influence the punishment Hughes ultimately receives.
However, proceedings could not continue as planned on Thursday morning.
Hughes was found guilty of premeditated murder and rape after drowning the child in 2023.
During the trial, she admitted holding Nada-Jane underwater for several minutes until she believed the child had died.
Under cross-examination, Hughes acknowledged there had been a struggle but maintained she was not in a sound state of mind at the time.
The court will consider evidence in aggravation and mitigation before determining an appropriate sentence.
The matter has been postponed to 15 April.
