The family of Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, has described him as a man whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

Mngwevu’s remains, along with those of three others, were recovered in Mozambique yesterday after they were swept away by floods in the Chókwè region earlier this month.

The week-long search came to an abrupt end when the vehicle they were travelling in was located and recovered.

While the identities of the other victims have not yet been released, Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosiphindile Xhakaza previously confirmed that they were residents of the municipality.

Mngwevu’s family say he was a loving and devoted husband.

“Throughout his life, he made a difference in people’s lives through his selfless service, principled leadership, and genuine care for the well-being of those around him. His integrity and kindness earned him deep respect and admiration across the communities he served,” the family said. “Beyond his public service, Andile was a pillar of strength within his family, a source of love, guidance, and unwavering support. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void; however, his legacy of service, leadership, and humanity will forever remain entrenched in the hearts of all who knew him.”

The family has asked for privacy and prayers during this difficult time.

Xhakaza, also paid tribute, describing Mngwevu as a dedicated member of the mayoral committee who consistently placed the city’s best interests first.

“Councillor Mngwevu was a committed public servant who dedicated his life to improving mobility, infrastructure development, and service delivery for the people he served. His passing is a profound loss to the City, the Council, and the broader community,” Xhakaza said.

Tributes continue to pour in from various political organisations and formations.
