Driver in deadly Vanderbjilpark scholar accident arrested

A 22-year-old man responsible for the deadly scholar transport accident in Vanderbjilpark has been arrested.

The driver, who faces twelve counts of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving, is expected to appear in court by Thursday.

It is alleged that the driver, who was ferrying school children, collided with a truck after attempting to overtake several cars on a narrow road.

Twelve learners died in the tragedy, while five others were taken to the hospital.

Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says investigations are underway as police continue to obtain witness statements.

“The driver of the truck that was involved in the accident escaped unharmed, while the passenger sustained injuries and was receiving treatment in the hospital.”

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education says one pupil of the twelve deceased remains unidentified.

The Gauteng Forensic Pathology Service aims to finalise all autopsies by the close of business on Tuesday, to enable families to continue with funeral preparations.

Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi has confirmed that the driver’s Public Driver’s Permit (PDP) license expired in November last year.

Lesufi also confirmed that only two learners remain in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while others are receiving treatment for moderate injuries.

The Premier says the truck driver is cooperating with police and has provided them with a statement amid investigations.

Meanwhile, Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube says government will offer the affected families all the necessary support they need.

“Psychosocial support has already been activated, so that we can make sure that families are supported. This psychosocial support is also extended to schools.”

Gwarube says while various government stakeholders are working on addressing scholar transport issues, driver error remains the primary concern.

“We often find ourselves in these situations because people who are ferrying our learners are not taking the necessary precautions,” Gwarube said. “We can’t keep coming to families and saying, we are deeply sorry and sending condolences.”

The minister added that a number of organisations and community members have rallied together to assist the affected families.
