Durban’s city center came to a standstill today as hundreds of protesters, led by the March and March Movement and joined by several political parties, took to the streets to demand stronger action against alleged illegal activities occurring in the South Beach area.
The demonstration began outside the Durban City Hall and proceeded to the Point Police Station, where protesters carried placards and chanted slogans calling for accountability from law enforcement and local government.
The demonstrators claim that foreign nationals have “taken over” parts of the city, including the Point precinct, allegedly restricting access for South Africans.
The movement’s founder, former radio personality Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, said the protest aimed to urge authorities to act and for citizens to “reclaim their city.”

They say the city of Durban cannot have areas that are dominated by undocumented immigrants, where South Africans are made to walk and live in fear in those areas. They also accused corrupt officials of turning a blind eye to the illegal activities that have plagued the area for years.
