British comedian and actor, Russell Brand, is facing a possible lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial in London.

A jury at Southwark Crown Court delivered its verdict this week, finding the 51-year-old guilty of offences involving four women that took place between 1999 and 2009.

Brand was, however, acquitted of two further rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.

The trial heard accounts from the women, including one who testified that Brand raped her at his London home in 2009 after they met following his comedy performance at the Hammersmith Apollo.

She told the court that although they initially had consensual sex, Brand later raped her anally, causing her pain and injury.

Another complainant said Brand ignored her pleas to stop during an assault that left her bleeding and in pain.

Reacting to the conviction, Senior Crown Prosecutor, David Roberts, described Brand as predatory, accusing him of using his celebrity status to exploit women.

“He was a manipulator, with an insatiable desire to get what he wanted regardless of whether consent was given or not,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the convictions represented justice for the women who came forward, adding that the lasting impact of the offences should not be underestimated.

The court also heard that Brand previously told his former flatmate, Mark Pinheiro, that he had allegedly set himself a target of sleeping with 5,000 women.

Prosecutors said Brand had discussed strategies to reach that target, including telling women what they wanted to hear.

Brand denied all the charges, maintaining that his sexual encounters were consensual.

Giving evidence on 28 October, he told the jury that the allegations had been deeply traumatic and had a devastating impact on his life. He also described sexual consent as “fundamental”.

Brand, who was previously married to American pop star, Katy Perry, has in recent years built an online following around Christianity and religious content.

Following the verdict, Brand was denied bail and remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing, scheduled for Monday, 9 November.

Judge Justice Bennathan told Brand to expect a significant custodial sentence, indicating that a prison term of some length would follow.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police say Brand remains under investigation in connection with two further allegations of rape. Police confirmed that he had previously been interviewed under caution in relation to the allegations.
