Erasmus provides injury update, keeps All Blacks guessing

Springbok coach, Rassie Erasmus, has confirmed that captain Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche are the only players who are in doubt for Saturday’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Series opener against the All Blacks at Ellis Park.

Kolisi suffered another hamstring injury on his return from injury against Los Pumas in Argentina two weeks ago.

Nche, meanwhile, suffered a setback during the Springboks’ Nations Championship victory over England and was left out of the tour to South America as a precaution.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Erasmus said both players could feature against New Zealand in Johannesburg if they come through training.

“Injury-wise, they are probably the only two doubtful players,” the head coach said before providing an update on lock Franco Mostert.

“Sous (Mostert) is really looking well, and I wouldn’t say Siya and Ox are still injured; it’s niggles. If they get through today, they might be good for us.”

The Bok mentor also said delaying the team announcement until Thursday was a sign of respect for their opponents.

“The announcement only being on Thursday is to respect New Zealand and knowing how tough this one is going to be,” he said.

“For this one specifically, we think the less time they have to prepare for our team, the better. So, it’s not.”
