Police probe murder after teenagers found dead at Mpumalanga lodge

Police in Mpumalanga are investigating a murder case and an inquest following the deaths of two teenagers at a lodge in Sabie.

The 17-year-old female, Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, is believed to have been strangled, while the 19-year-old male, Ethan Coetzee, is believed to have died by suicide.

Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says the two teenagers were found dead at the lodge.

“Police received a complaint on Monday at approximately 07h50 regarding two people who were found deceased at the lodge.

“Upon arrival at the scene, members of the police found a 19-year-old male and a 17-year-old female. Both were declared dead at the scene.”

Masondo says investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are continuing. The teenagers are understood to have been in a romantic relationship.

The family of Cameron Waldeck-Cooks has broken its silence following the tragedy.

Her parents, Derrick Cooks and Claire Waldeck, acknowledged the high-profile nature of the deaths of the two St Stithians learners and appealed to the public not to present speculation as fact while the forensic investigation continues.

St Stithians College in Johannesburg has extended its condolences to the families of the two teenagers, who were both members of the school community.

In a heartfelt statement, the school described Waldeck-Cooks as an accomplished sportswoman, who will be remembered for her kindness, warmth and determination.

“A dedicated and passionate rower, she earned the respect of her peers and coaches through her commitment, perseverance and love for the sport. She was a natural leader and a mentor to many younger girls in the rowing programme, often taking on the role of a supportive “big sister” who encouraged and inspired those around her.”

“She approached life with resilience, quiet strength and a genuine care for those around her. Today, our community mourns the loss of a cherished student, daughter, sister and dear friend who was loved by all and will be remembered with great affection.”

Coetzee, who matriculated from the school last year, was remembered as a young man of strength, commitment, and humility.

“Ethan possessed a natural warmth and charisma that drew people to him, forging strong friendships. He could instill confidence in others, offering encouragement when it was needed most and making those around him feel seen, valued, and supported.”
