Six suspects arrested in connection with an alleged insurance fraud scheme in Limpopo are expected to return to court on 25 March to apply for bail.

The group made their first appearance in the Polokwane High Court today after their arrest earlier this week.

They form part of a wider network of 11 accused believed to have orchestrated a R10-million insurance fraud, murder and money-laundering scheme allegedly led by former police sergeant, Rachel Kutumela.

Kutumela’s husband, a school principal, along with her two siblings, a cousin and a traditional healer were among those arrested during a police operation led by Captain, Keshi Mabunda.

Investigators alleged that life and funeral policies were fraudulently taken out on about ten unsuspecting victims before they were murdered so that payouts could be claimed.

The accused now face a combined 47 charges, including nine counts of murder.

The matter was postponed for further investigations and additional applications, including possible developments relating to charges against accused number four.

Authorities have also confirmed that they are still searching for an eleventh suspect linked to the alleged syndicate.

Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says efforts to trace the individual are ongoing.

“The person has not handed themselves over to the police. We did make contact, but we are still looking for that particular individual, believed to be the other brother. A twin brother of Rachel Kutumela’s other brother.”

Meanwhile, investigators say the probe has expanded beyond Limpopo, with at least 62 similar cases now under investigation in the Eastern Cape.
