Former Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, has been formally charged with corruption, in connection to the ’10 64′ locomotives saga at Transnet.
Gigaba joined the former Transnet executives, Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama, Anoj Singh and Thamsanqa Jiyane as the fifth suspect in the dock at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
The case relates to alleged procurement irregularities at Transnet involving the acquisition of more than 1,000 locomotives worth over R54 billion, during Gigaba’s tenure as Minister from 2010 to 2014.
The state further accuses Gigaba, who was Public Enterprises Minister at the time, of accepting undisclosed amounts of cash from the Gupta family.
Investigating Directorate Against Corruption spokesperson Henry Mamothame says the matter has been postponed to 30 January 2026 for the disclosure of the docket.
I have been summoned to appear in court this morning. I do not know what the charges are yet, but I’ll let you know after receiving the charge sheet. Malusi Gigaba is no stranger to controversy; his name featured prominently at the State Capture Commission. The Zondo Commission found that he played a role in Brian Molefe’s appointment as Transnet CEO.
It further recommended that Gigaba be investigated for corruption and racketeering.
ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, says Gigaba will now be expected to voluntarily step aside, in line with the party’s resolution.
“This is consistent with the policy of the ANC to step aside, so there is no big deal about that.”
The matter has been postponed to 30 January 2026 for the disclosure of the docket, the provision of an indictment, and for a date to be set for the case to be transfered to the High Court.
