The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning of possible severe thunderstorms and flooding across Gauteng this weekend.
A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for several provinces, including Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Free State.
The harsh weather could also affect visibility, prompting motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads.
Forecaster, Andre Fourie, says the drop in temperatures is a result of a low-pressure system that will affect the country from Saturday through to Monday.
“The possible resulting impacts include the flooding of settlements and other properties. Dangerous driving conditions, damage to infrastructure, and the disruption of essential services.”
Meanwhile in Gauteng, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will lead an operation ahead of the upcoming G20 Leaders Summit.
Several national routes — including the N1, M1 and N12 — will be closed on Saturday.
Key urban roads such as Jan Smuts Avenue, Grayston Drive, Oxford Road and Winnie Mandela Drive will also be affected.
