Congratulatory messages are pouring in from around the world following the historic election of American lawmaker, Zohran Mamdani, as the new Mayor of New York City.
Mamdani has made history, as the first Muslim and South Asian to lead America’s largest and most diverse city.
Born in Uganda and raised in the United States, the 34-year-old from Queens also becomes New York’s youngest mayor in more than a century — marking a generational and cultural shift in the city’s politics.
In a major win for the Democratic Party, Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa after a heated campaign.
Known for his progressive stance on immigrant rights, affordable housing, and police accountability — Mamdani thanked supporters for believing in a “New York that works for everyone.”
“Thank you, my friends. The sun may have set over our city this evening, but as Eugene Debs once said, I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity. For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands,” he said.
“And yet over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater.”
According to the New York City Board of Elections, more than two million New Yorkers cast their ballots — marking the highest voter turnout in a mayoral race in over 50 years.
Mamdani’s victory has been hailed as a milestone for diversity and inclusion in American politics.
World leaders, activists, and citizens across the globe have taken to social media to celebrate his win.
The Economic Freedom Fighters have also congratulated Mamdani, praising his outspoken support for Palestine — calling it a moral awakening in US politics.
