Former National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has denied ever meeting or knowing alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
This, follows testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where Witness C — involved in Matlala’s arrest in May — claimed Matlala told police he had been at Phiyega’s Midrand home shortly before being apprehended.
The commission has been tasked with probing the allegations of political interference and corruption in South Africa’s criminal justice system, following bombshell revelations by KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on July 6.
In a statement, Phiyega said she has never met Matlala and is seeking a legal opportunity to challenge Witness C’s claims, calling the assertions fabricated and in need of urgent clarification.
“I hereby request a formal opportunity to challenge this testimony through the appropriate legal or procedural channels.”

Witness C detailed how Matlala was arrested for the attempted hit on his ex-girlfriend and socialite Tebogo Thobejane.
“When he left those premises of [Phiyega], his motorcarde was driving at a very high speed and we couldn’t catch him. Fortunately his Mercedes hit a pothole along New Road and his car came to a standstill on the side of the road.”

Several bombshells were dropped by Witness C, including allegations that Matlala donated R500,000 towards embattled Minister Senzo Mchunu’s ANC presidential campaign.
The witness further testified that during a search of Matlala’s residence, he boasted about his close connections to high-ranking SAPS officials, sharing their personal contact details — including suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
Matlala is also a key suspect in a string of kidnappings across Gauteng, including the November 2024 abduction of Pretoria businessman Jerry Boshoga, who disappeared after a meeting in Centurion.
