Proteas Women’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, has lauded her side resilience and fighting spirit after South Africa reached their first-ever World Cup final.
Wolvaardt led from the front with a magnificent 169 off 143 balls, steering the Proteas to 319/7 in their semi-final clash against England. Her innings, featuring 20 fours and four sixes, anchored the team despite losing key wickets in the middle overs.
She received strong support from Tazmin Brits (45), Marizanne Kapp (42), and Chloe Tryon (33), while England’s Sophie Ecclestone (4-44) was the pick of the bowlers.
After losing the toss, South Africa delivered a clinical bowling performance to seal the win. Kapp struck twice in the opening over, removing Amy Jones and Heather Knight, before Ayabonga Khaka dismissed Tammy Beaumont to leave England reeling at 3/1.
Despite valiant half-centuries from Nat Sciver-Brunt (64) and Alice Capsey (50), Kapp’s devastating spell of 5/34 ended any hopes of a comeback. England were bowled out for 194 in the 43rd over, handing South Africa a commanding victory.
Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Wolvaardt said it was tough but they had one goal in mind.
The Proteas will face either Australia or India in Sunday’s final.
