The Nobel Peace Prize Committee has defended its decision not to award US President Donald Trump, saying he does not meet the prize’s standards of courage and integrity.

Instead, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was announced as the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate at a ceremony in Norway today.

Trump, who had been nominated more than ten times by world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, had expressed confidence he would win the prestigious award.

Earlier this week, Trump announced a breakthrough in the Gaza conflict, a first-phase ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The deal, reached after three days of indirect talks in Egypt and mediated by the US, Qatar, and Turkey, includes a hostage-prisoner exchange and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.

More than 67,000 people have died since the war began over two years ago.

Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to release 20 hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners within 72 hours of the deal’s formal signing, expected later today.

Responding to questions, Nobel Peace Prize Committee Chair Jørgen Frydnes said the decision to exclude Trump was carefully deliberated.

“This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates a room filled with both courage and integrity.”

The committee says Machado is most deserving of the honour for her decades-long fight to promote democratic rights and political freedom in Venezuela.

Shortly after the announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee informed María Corina Machado of her win. The 58-year-old said she was stunned and had not expected the accolade.

Online, the announcement sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users mocking Trump for missing out on the prize.
