Cultural expert, Musa Xulu, has spoken out against tribalism and cultural superiority, warning that such attitudes threaten South Africa’s unity and fuel division.

Xulu made the remarks in response to tribalist and colorist comments directed at Nokubonga Ngobeni, the wife of Shaka iLembe star Wiseman Ncube.

Ncube recently married his long-time partner in a traditional ceremony in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, attended by family, friends, and colleagues.

Although many people celebrated the marriage, some online critics, mostly isiZulu speakers, targeted the model and costume designer for being Tsonga and made negative remarks about her appearance.

Xulu condemned the behavior, saying it is uncultured and un-African to judge a couple’s appearance at a wedding.

He called for respect and equality among all ethnic groups and cultures, emphasizing that no one culture is inherently superior to another.

“Zulus culturally are going through a very dangerous phase of cultural superiority where they think that, some of them think that, if you’re not a Zulu, you are nothing, and it’s not good for South Africa,” Xula said.

“It should be confronted by cultural experts and Makosi and everyone, politicians that were all South Africans, fellow South Africans, who may come from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, but no one is superior to the other and especially also in relation to the constitution,” he added.

Xulu says everyone in South Africa should be treated with respect, and no culture is superior. He adds that the couple should be aware of the current trend of dangerous cultural superiority.

Meanwhile, some social media users have rallied behind Ncube’s wife, condemning those who targeted her online.
