The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says French authorities are finalising their investigation into the death of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, with preliminary results expected to be released on Sunday.
DIRCO Deputy Minister, Alvin Botes, confirmed that once the investigation is complete, efforts to repatriate Mthethwa’s body will be expedited.
According to reports, the former cabinet minister fell from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Hotel in Paris, after being reported missing.
The exact circumstances of his death remain under investigation.
Botes, who recently visited the Mthethwa family in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, alongside ANC members, said the late ambassador’s family has formally identified his body in Paris.
He urged the public and media to refrain from speculation and await the preliminary investigation results.
Mthethwa, 58, held several cabinet positions, including Police and Sports, Arts and Culture, before his appointment as ambassador to France in December 2023.
Speaking at Mthethwa’s homestead, ANC NEC member Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma hailed him as a national hero and recalled their final conversation prior to his diplomatic deployment.
The Mthethwa family has expressed gratitude to both the South African and French governments for their support and voiced hope that the ongoing investigation will provide clarity.

His brother said they remain optimistic that the truth will soon come to light.
Mthethwa was recently thrust back into the spotlight after being named in the Madlanga Commission for alleged interference during his tenure as Police Minister.
He was also listed by the EFF among individuals proposed to be summoned by Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating serious corruption allegations within the South African Police Service (SAPS), as raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
