The man accused of a series of rapes and other violent crimes in Soweto, will remain behind bars until November, as the state prepares to add more charges to his case.
Oupa Hector Ringani (41) was arrested last Wednesday and currently faces a long list of charges, including 35 counts of rape, 20 counts of aggravated robbery, 21 counts of kidnapping, and 15 counts of pointing a firearm.
The alleged crimes were committed between 2008 and 2025 in the areas of Diepkloof and Orlando.
Police say Ringani targeted victims aged between 14 and 55, using a firearm and knife to threaten them. He allegedly concealed his identity with a balaclava and mask during the attacks.
Ringani made a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrates’ Court on Monday, though proceedings were delayed due to a power outage caused by cable theft.
The accused appeared visibly emotional and informed the court that he would not be applying for bail—a decision welcomed by the prosecution.
The court also heard that he has prior convictions for robbery, arson (in Mokopane, Limpopo), and unlawful escape from custody in Lenasia.
Two additional cases have since been reported in the North West Province, potentially widening the scope of the investigation.
Magistrate Tshepiso Maepa, noted that due to the high number of charges, the defence team must first finalize the full charge sheet before she can review the case thoroughly.
Ringani will remain in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for November 14, which is expected to take place virtually.
The case could be transferred to the High Court.
SAPS is really failing us, this man has 10 rape cases and has been arrested before yet he is still roaming the streets!? Why did they release him!?🤬#MostWanted
