More boots deployed to Katlehong amid taxi violence

Acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, has deployed additional law enforcement officers to Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, in response to the escalating taxi violence in the area.

The township, located in Ekurhuleni, has recently become a hotspot for unrest, allegedly fueled by ongoing rivalries within the taxi industry.

This intervention follows widespread commuter disruptions after taxi drivers suspended operations on Thursday afternoon.

The strike was sparked by the impounding of several 10-seater taxis that authorities claim were operating without valid licenses.

Minister Cachalia emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety, saying enforcement efforts will be intensified in other areas identified as violence-prone.

“Our primary concern is the safety of the public and the restoration of law and order,” he said.

“No form of violence will be tolerated and those found to be responsible will face the full might of the law.”

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has since called off the strike, but maintains that it will continue engaging with the government on ongoing issues affecting the industry.

SANTACO’s regional secretary, Zweli Mnisi, said the suspension of services was a deliberate move to highlight grievances within the sector.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has apologized to commuters for the disruption and assured the public that restoring order in the taxi industry  is a priority.
