Ten law enforcement officers accused of stealing during a high-profile raid in Edenvale are expected back in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today as their bail application continues.

The accused, six members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and four South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, were arrested earlier this week following an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

They face charges of theft after allegedly pocketing illicit goods during a multi-disciplinary operation on June 4, led by Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi. The raid targeted a shop on Hermila Avenue in Edenvale, where a cashier was arrested for selling illegal cigarettes, and another worker was detained for immigration violations.

According to IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, the officers allegedly seized items including illicit cigarettes worth R150,000, R35,000 in cash, and headache pills valued at nearly R5,000 — but failed to properly record them.

“The shop manager disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the Occurrence Book, and reported the matter to the Station Commander,” said Suping.

The officers made their first appearance on Tuesday and maintained a low profile as their legal teams argued for bail, claiming they met all necessary conditions.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, later confirmed that the initial charge of corruption had been dropped.

“Based on the evidence in the docket, the only charge that could be sustained against all the accused was theft,” she explained.

Court proceedings were postponed yesterday due to delays.

The state has indicated it will not oppose bail.
