Residents of Newclare have called on the justice system to show no leniency in the case involving a mother and her three co-accused, linked to a viral video showing a 4-year-old boy being coached to smoke an unknown substance.

The four accused appeared for the second time in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse.

The public outcry stems from footage that circulated widely online, showing the child being encouraged to smoke from a makeshift pipe.

The courtroom operated under tighter restrictions following the previous court appearance, which was broadcasted live and showed visuals of the accused, a violation of legal protocols aimed at protecting the identity of minors. The new conditions strictly prohibit photographs, video footage, or audio recordings during proceedings to safeguard the child’s dignity and privacy.

During the hearing, it emerged that the investigating officer was unable to verify the residential addresses initially submitted by the accused. The defence has since provided alternative addresses, prompting a postponement until Thursday to allow further verification.

Speaking outside court, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, confirmed that medical findings from tests conducted on the boy will not be made public.

She also stated that the state will oppose bail.

Meanwhile, outside the court, community outrage continued to build, as dozens of Westbury residents and other concerned citizens gathered, calling for swift justice and harsher penalties for crimes involving children.

Community activist, Dereleen James, was among those present, condemning the repeated delays.

James also warned that the case reflects a broader crisis in the country.

The four accused, aged between 29 and 51, will remain behind bars until their next court appearance on Thursday.
