What began as a routine commute, ended up in a seven-vehicle pile-up on the M1 highway near Booysens, earlier today.
At least three people were seriously injured, after a passenger allegedly got into an altercation with the bus driver and grabbed the steering wheel, while the vehicle was in motion.
The bus then lost control, veered off the M1 South, crossed the central barricades and median, and collided with six vehicles travelling on the M1 North.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, says a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
Fihla says it is still unclear what led to the altercation.

Another incident that sparked public outrage today, involves an alleged drunk scholar transport driver.
At least 12 pupils were hospitalised after their transport overturned in Montgomery Park, Randburg.
It is reported that the driver of the white Toyota Quantum minibus reportedly lost control, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, resulting in the crash.
Fihla says the transport driver has been detained at the Sophiatown police station and will be charged with negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
