Tributes continue to pour in for Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, following the sad news of his death.

The football fraternity has been left heartbroken after news broke that the 28-year-old and his brother were killed in a car crash, just two weeks after the football star’s nuptials.

According to the Spanish authorities, the Portuguese national’s car, a Lamborghini, veered off the road after a tyre burst, resulting in it catching fire.

Jota recently won the Premier League title with the Reds, and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.

The 28-year-old moved to Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2017, initially on a season-long loan before the move was made permanent. He went on to score 44 goals in 131 appearances across his three seasons with the club.

He then left and joined Liverpool in 2020 after helping Nuno Espirito Santo’s side return to the Premier League.

Liverpool say they are “devastated” by the loss the club describes as unimaginable.

The 28-year-old scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.

Jota previously played for Pacos de Ferreira, Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolves – for whom he netted 44 goals in 131 games.

His  final match was for Portugal in their UEFA Nations League final win against Spain. He scored 14 goals in 49 internationals.

His Liverpool teammates have expressed say they can’t believe that he is no more.

Darwin Nunez was the first to post, sharing a picture of him and Jota celebrating a goal at Anfield.

“There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field. I send all my strength to his family, from where he is I’m sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children.” 💔

Luis Diaz added a post to his Instagram story, with Jota holding up the shirt with his name on the back, when the Colombian’s father was kidnapped.

His Portugal teammates also reflected on memories with the forward.

Manchester United and Portugal midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, led the tributes via his Instagram story.

“May you and your brother find the peace you need to watch over your loved ones who lost you too soon and suddenly.”

Midfielder, Ruben Neves: “They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you.”

Defender, Diogo Dalot: “Devastating.. Speechless.. Much strength to the family.”

Midfielder, Pedro Goncalves: “My deepest condolences to the family.”

Goalkeeper, Diogo Costa: “There are no words, rest in peace.”

Cristiano Ronaldo: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.”

Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager who signed Jota for the Reds, also expressed his sadness.

Football bodies, including UEFA, have also reacted to the tragic news.

The European football’s governing body announced that a moment of silence would be observed at all Women’s European Championship games on Thursday and Friday, including Portugal’s tie against Spain.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Diogo’s family, friends and team-mates at Liverpool and Portugal,” said the Football Association.

The Premier League said football had lost a champion, who will be forever missed.

Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said: “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal’s name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic.”

UK Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer, also expressed his condolences.
