Danny Jordaan could not give a direct answer to Members of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture on whether he will run for a fourth term as the President of the South African Football Association (SAFA).
Jordaan has been president of the association since 2013.
With the next SAFA elections scheduled for next year, he told MPs that the regional members of SAFA will decide if he should continue.
“In any position in a democracy, you cannot give yourself a position. You cannot decide when you stay and when you go. That is the responsibility of our 52 regions; they will decide who their president should be,” said Jordaan.
According to the 73-year-old Jordaan, he and his his leadership are victims of a political campaign aimed at discrediting them.
“South African football is at the centre of a huge debate regarding the elections. Elections is only next year, but it has already started, and you see many news outlets disseminating a lot of stories.”
He faces three charges of fraud and one of conspiracy to commit the crime for an almost one million rand payment from SAFA for his personal benefit. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
