The Public Servants Association (PSA) believes the tragic death of medical intern Dr. Alulutho Mazwi could have been avoided.

PSA says they have consistently issued warnings about the toxic working conditions that junior medics endure in public hospitals, often at the hands of their seniors.

It is alleged that the 25-year-old was forced to report for duty by a supervisor at the Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban, despite having informed them of his ill health.

He collapsed and died while on duty at the hospital on Monday.

The message he sent to his manager before he was ordered to go work regardless of his situation is attached below.

The hospital’s CEO has since launched an internal investigation into the incident.

Some of the medical interns at the hospital allege that he had collapsed twice before while on duty.

PSA KZN Manager Mlungisi Ndlovu, says the challenges faced by junior doctors at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban are not unique to this facility.

The association is calling for the health officials linked to the victimization and eventual death of Dr Mazwi to be placed on precautionary suspension.

Ndlovu is demanding the intervention of the Provincial Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane, emphasizing the urgent need to address the shortage of doctors in public hospitals.

The Chairperson of the South African Medical Association, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa has also weighed has also weighed in on the matter.

Dr Mzukwa says the death of Dr. Mazwi serves as a reminder of the abuse and threats in the medical field, which disproportionately affect junior and intern medics.

He urged management and employers to address the toxic environment in some hospitals.

The South African Medical Association Trade Union in KwaZulu-Natal says the death of this young doctor must be a wake-up call to all medical practitioners.

“We can no longer ignore the severe strain and inhumane treatment faced by those who are dedicating their lives to saving others.”
