Spanish coach Jose Riveiro has been linked with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

This follows the announcement of his early departure from Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates on Monday.

In a statement that sent shock waves through the fans, Pirates revealed that Riveiro requested to leave before the expiry of his contract in June 2025.

The renowned coach will field his final Pirates game on Tuesday night, when they take on Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership, at the Orlando Stadium.

Pirates’ announcement comes after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this past weekend.

A media outlet in Egypt, Yalla Kora, has reported that Riveiro will arrive at Al Ahly this week to finalise his deal with the North African team.

Ahly are on the hunt for a coach to replace Marcel Koller, who was fired in April after the team’s exit from the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Riveiro faced Al Ahly with Pirates twice in the group stages of the continental tournament this season, where he defeated them 2-1 in Cairo Stadium and played to a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium.

In his three seasons at Pirates, Riveiro won five domestic cups and finished second on the log for two seasons in a row. Under the tactician, the Soweto giants won three successive MTN8 trophies and two Nedbank Cup titles.
