Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha says he is grateful to outgoing Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, for playing a pivotal role in his development.
The former SuperSport United player joined the Buccaneers in January 2024 on a six-month loan deal after struggling for game time at Matsatsantsa.
Upon linking up with Riveiro, the 25-year-old quickly became a key figure for the Buccaneers, playing an instrumental role in their 2024 Nedbank Cup.
“I’m really grateful to the coach and the team for giving me the opportunity,” Mbatha said to the media in Durban ahead of the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs.
“I never doubted my talent but I’m someone who believed that one day it’s going to happen.”
Under Riveiro’s tutelage, Mbatha also caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, earning a call-up to represent the national team.
“And for me coach has improved my football in a way that I didn’t think it would’ve happened,” Mbatha said.
“Because for the coach to come from overseas and coach in South Africa it’s something that is really inspiring us.
“And we believe that one day we will probably make it overseas.”
