A man has taken to social media, threatening to sue the Health Department and his medical doctor for failing to warn him about the side effects of circumcision.

The man, Abednego, has also called on men who want to join his lawsuit to message him.

The US-based South African claims that his sexual health was significantly better before undergoing the procedure, and he feels deceived by the health authorities.

“We need to sue health authorities for promoting circumcision and coercing us and telling us about all these health benefits. We are actually victims of the health sector.”
“If you are a man and got circumcised after you were sexually active, you know what I’m talking about, the sex was better before you were circumcised.”
At the heart of his gripe, he says, is the lack of awareness of the potential side-effects of the procedure.
“My problem is why are we not warned about this in media campaigns surrounding circumcision and before we commit to it? I would have never done it had I been warned about this.”

He demands that someone be held responsible for the consequences he’s now facing.

Some have echoed Abednego’s concerns, agreeing that circumcision can diminish sexual pleasure.

Others argue that the procedure does not necessarily reduce the risk of infections, a claim KeReady’s Dr. Busi Kabane-Bailey has refuted.

She says it has been proven through research that circumcision can actually reduce the risk of HIV infections, STIs, and HPV.

Kabane-Bailey emphasised the importance of understanding that circumcision is a wound, and its effects depend on how well it is cared for and how it heals.

“It is also important to factor in the psychological element of that as well, sex is also a deeply mental thing. If you can change your mindset around circumcision, it can have positive impacts too.”

Kabane-Bailey didn’t answer YNews on whether sexual pleasure is indeed reduced after circumcision.

However, a 2013 study on the sensitivity of the foreskin and its importance in erogenous sensitivity agrees with Abednego.

According to the National Laboratory of Medicine’s study, their analysis sample of 1 059 uncircumcised and 310 circumcised men – circumcised men reported decreased sexual pleasure and lower orgasm intensity.

They also stated more effort was required to achieve orgasm, and a higher percentage of them experienced unusual sensations like burning, prickling, itching, or tingling and numbness of the glans penis.

“This study confirms the importance of the foreskin for penile sensitivity, overall sexual satisfaction, and penile functioning. Furthermore, this study shows that a higher percentage of circumcised men experience discomfort or pain and unusual sensations as compared with the uncircumcised population. Before circumcision without medical indication, adult men, and parents considering circumcision of their sons, should be informed of the importance of the foreskin in male sexuality,” it concludes.
