The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued a stern warning against offering bribes to officers, making it clear that those who attempt to do so could face arrest.

The department is currently investigating multiple cases where JMPD officers allegedly solicited bribes from the public via e-Wallets and CashSend.

According to reports, the officers are said to be using ghost phone numbers to facilitate these illicit transactions.

The department has received a significant number of complaints about these unscrupulous actions, prompting a swift response.

JMPD Chief of Police, Chief Patrick Jaca, emphasised that the department will not tolerate any form of corruption within its ranks.

“These alleged actions are a betrayal of public trust and undermine the department’s commitment to serving the community with integrity,” said Jaca.

He also issued a clear and unequivocal warning to the officers involved, saying those found engaging in corrupt practices will face prosecution.

“We are here to serve and protect, not to exploit. I urge all citizens to report any instances of corruption so that we can work together to maintain a clean and trustworthy police service,” Jaca added.

Some took to X, defending the law enforcement officials – saying the public is the one encouraging the lawlessness, while some say the only solution will be body cams.

“South Africa is a cashless economy let’s focus on arresting the criminals instead of humiliating the police at every point and chance,” said one social media user.
