The CEO of Childline South Africa, Dumisile Nala, has emphasised the importance of parents seeking support when facing difficulties in protecting and caring for their children.
Nala’s comments come in response to the disturbing case of 32-year-old Keneiwe Shalaba, who is accused of selling her two-year-old son, Kutlwano.
In an unsettling twist, Shalaba gave birth to another child while in police custody.
Shalaba was set to appear again today in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court, facing multiple charges, including trafficking and conspiracy to commit a crime.
She was arrested in November of last year after her son went missing.
It is alleged that a deposit of R75 000 was made into her account on the same day she reported her son’s kidnapping.
The court has also heard details about a botched hit she allegedly orchestrated against Kutlwano’s father, after he received a sum of money from a stokvel.
Nala expressed concern over the rising number of cases where mothers are selling their children. She suggested that a combination of financial struggles, poverty, and mental health issues may contribute to such actions.
“Whatever challenges a mother may be facing, it’s crucial they seek help. If financial constraints are the issue, social welfare services are available to offer support, guidance, and access to essential resources,” Nala added.
She also emphasised the importance of accessible social workers within communities to provide support in such situations.
