Former footballer, Teko Modise, says the Royal AM debacle is sad to witness, especially for the players who have been deprived of doing what they love.

Royal AM has been in the deep end as its owner, businesswoman and reality TV star, Shauwn “Mam’Mkhize” Mkhize, is embroiled in tax problems that have spilled over to the club.

The socialite and businesswoman allegedly owes the South African Revenue Service (Sars) R40 million in tax. As a result, the revenue collection agency has now taken over the club in a bid to recoup the funds.

This has also resulted in the suspension of the club’s fixtures in the Betway Premier Soccer League and other cup competitions, including the Nedbank Cup.

The Nedbank Cup round of 16 is set to get underway from tomorrow (Wednesday) and Modise says he hopes the situation will be resolved soon.

Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that the Nedbank Cup fixture between Royal AM/Milford FC vs. Sekhukhune United will be postponed to a later date.

The KZN-based side are also facing a FIFA transfer ban and the non-payment of players, amongst other issues.

The ban, which was imposed in January last year, is over outstanding payments to former Striker Nurkovic, who is owed R15 million in salary payments.

It was enforced for three transfer windows, meaning the KZN team couldn’t get new players to bolster the squad. This also led to the PSL kicking the club out of the DStv Diski Challenge because it couldn’t field a team in the competition.

Speaking to YSports, Modise has warned the big teams to not underestimate the smaller clubs in the Nedbank Cup competition.

Kicking off the action will be SuperSport United who will face Cape Town Spurs. They will be followed by Stellenbosch FC, hosting Polokwane City the next day.

Durban City and TS Galaxy will play against each other on Friday.

On Saturday, defending champions Orlando Pirates will welcome Baroka FC to Orlando Stadium, while Marumo Gallants will take on AmaZulu FC.

Kaizer Chiefs go head-to-head with Chippa United at FNB Stadium later that day.

Mamelodi Sundowns will then take on Mpheni Home Defenders on Sunday.
