President Cyril Ramaphosa fired back at South Africa’s critics, saying South Africa will not be bullied.
While he did not name his US counterpart, Donald Trump, by name – it is widely believed he was responding to him amid diplomatic tensions over his threat to cut funding to Pretoria.
Trump cited the alleged confiscation of land and the mistreatment of certain classes of people as reasons for his strong stance against South Africa.
The hostility also followed that of Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, who last week accused Ramaphosa of distorting the truth about the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, sparking an uproar regarding the role of SANDF members deployed in the country.
Despite this and Rwanda’s unprecedented challenge to South Africa, President Ramaphosa is standing firm, articulating the country’s resolve not to compromise its founding principles of democracy.
“We will speak with one voice in defense of our national interests, our sovereignty, and our constitutional democracy,” he said.
“By staying true to our values, harnessing our unique strengths and resources, and forging a common purpose, we can turn these trying circumstances to our advantage and propel our country forward.”
Ramaphosa reminded citizens that South Africa stands for peace, justice, equality, and solidarity.
He also reiterated that the presence of South African peacekeepers in the eastern DRC is a testament to the country’s ongoing commitment to the peaceful resolution of one of the world’s most intractable conflicts.
Scores of people have died in the Central African country, including 14 South African troops who are yet to be repatriated back home.
“We call on all parties to embrace the current diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process,” said Ramaphosa.
Political analyst, Professor Sam Koma, says South Africa is a sovereign state with international obligations.
“It has the right to take a stand and champion causes for addressing human rights issues, including calling for peaceful resolutions to conflicts across the globe.” Written by Lindiwe Mpanza
