Troubles keep mounting for Royal AM FC and now the club could possibly lose a R27-million sponsorship from Msunduzi Municipality.

Businesswoman and reality TV star, Shauwn “Mam’Mkhize” Mkhize, has been embroiled in tax issues that have now spilled over to the club.

The socialite and businesswoman allegedly owes Sars R40 million in tax, which has resulted in the revenue collection agency taking over the club

As if that’s not enough, the KZN-based side are also facing a FIFA transfer ban and the non-payment of players, amongst other issues.

The ban, which was imposed in January last year, is over outstanding payments to former Striker Nurkovic, who the club owes about R15 million in salary payments.

It was enforced for three transfer windows, meaning the KZN team couldn’t get new players to bolster the squad. This also led to the PSL kicking the club out of the DStv Diski Challenge because it couldn’t field a team in the competition.

The KZN Local Division of the High Court granted a preservation order as well as a search, and seizure warrant in a case involving the SARS Commissioner versus Mam’Mkhize and others.

After that, her properties, including her mansion in La Lucia, north of Durban, were raided and her soccer team was placed under the curatorship of SARS.

Now the Msunduzi Municipality, in Pietermaritzburg, says it will decide on what to do about the sponsorship deal next week.

It’s described what is happening as embarrassing for the municipality.

The municipality’s remarks came after the Democratic Alliance (DA) submitted a motion, calling for the municipality to review and terminate the sponsorship.

DA Councillor in Msunduzi, Reggie Khanyile, says having any connection to the embattled side is damaging the municipality’s reputation.

This week, the PSL suspended all the club’s fixtures until further notice.

The league said was because it wasn’t certain that the club would be able to fulfill its obligations as it navigates the current storm.

Football fans have weighed in on the matter.
