Gogo Maweni, a well-known traditional healer and sangoma, today appeared before the Protea Magistrates Court on assault charges dating back to 2019.

The case was postponed to next Monday for a formal bail application.

There have also been claims that Maweni, who says she’s pregnant with twins, is linked to multiple murder cases.

However, Johannesburg police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says these allegations cannot be confirmed at this stage, pending further investigations.

The controversy surrounding Gogo Maweni, whose real name is Lee-Anne Mofokeng, began after her rival, Gogo Skhotheni, accused her of a series of murders on social media.

The allegations include a supposed police statement linking Maweni to at least five murder cases.

During court proceedings, Maweni’s legal team opposed the broadcasting of the 39-year-old’s legal troubles, fearing it may discredit her as a traditional healer.

However, the court granted the media broadcasting rights, saying it sets the record clear in the interest of justice.

The assault charges against Maweni stem from a complaint filed by a relative of her ex-boyfriend, who accused her of assault and grievous bodily harm in 2019.

Maweni has claimed ignorance to the outstanding warrant against her.
