EFF leader, Julius Malema, has taken a swipe at MK Party leader, Jacob Zuma, accusing him of abusing the concept of “black unity” for his own gain.

Malema made these remarks while delivering his political report at the EFF’s National People’s Assembly in Johannesburg, where over 2 000 delegates are gathered to discuss the party’s future.

Tensions between the EFF and the MK Party (MKP) have been rising, especially after several prominent EFF leaders, including former Deputy President Floyd Shivambu and Chairperson Dali Mpofu, defected to Zuma’s party.

Mpofu has even suggested that the EFF should close its doors and be absorbed by the MKP.

Malema, however, says he remains committed to the EFF’s core principles, emphasising that the party will not be swayed by external pressures.

“When they were fresh, they did not know black unity, and now that they see the grave, they see black unity,” Malema said, criticising Zuma’s seemingly sudden emphasis on unity.

He acknowledged that the party has faced electoral decline in the May elections and sabotage, but assured delegates that democratic processes would be upheld.

Meanwhile, EFF Student Command President, Sihle Lonzi, urged party supporters to protect the movement and prevent infiltration.

Lonzi also called on Malema not to fold to the MK Party, emphasising the need for the EFF to maintain its independence.

The conference is expected to see the nomination and election of the party’s top six leadership.

However, questions remain over the whereabouts of EFF MP, Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, who was not seen at the elective conference today and whether he will contest for the Deputy President position, which has been vacant since Shivambu’s defection to the MKP.
