Thulani Mngomezulu, the lawyer representing one of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, has passed away.

His family confirmed the tragic news in a statement on Tuesday.

Advocate Mngomezulu had been ill and was last seen in court on November 8.

“We confirm his untimely passing on the early hours of December 10, 2024, at Thelle Molorane Hospital in Vosloorus,” the statement read.

“We ask for your compassion, space, and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days.”

The legal expert was expected to begin cross-examining lead investigator, Bongani Gininda, this week.

In April, Mngomezulu told the court that he feared for his safety after two individuals allegedly trespassed at his residence.

The attorney believed the incident was connected to the trial.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, the presiding judge in the Meyiwa murder trial, indicated that Mngomezulu was entitled to police protection as a result.

“He suspects they were out to harm, injure, or kill him because this is what happens in South Africa. Mr. Mngomezulu, maybe you should lay a charge with the police so that it is realised that you are being assailed when you are performing your job as an officer of this court,” Mokgoatlheng added.

Condolences and tributes are pouring in on social media following the advocate’s passing.

This old goat made nasty comments about Mngomezulu yesterday after believing lies that he was seen in the corridors of the court. #SenzoMeyiwa #SenzoMeyiwaTrial pic.twitter.com/RvtmXZjtGi

Legal expert, Alton Heart, says accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, will need to be afforded an opportunity to get a new legal representative, who will also need time to familiarise themselves with the case.

“This is something that the judge really needs to apply his mind to and balance in many aspects. He needs to ask himself, if I allow the case to go ahead is it fair to the accused? Especially in this case that is very complex and it’s a serious offence with the accused facing a long jail term if convicted,” Heart added.
