This year’s recipient of the Standard Bank Top Women Young Achiever Award, Matshidiso Gama, is encouraging young aspiring entrepreneurs to be deliberate about their growth and development.
The 35-year-old from Kwa-Thema near Springs, in Ekurhuleni, was recognised for showing a promising potential, excellent business acumen at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Gama is celebrated for the passion she’s shown in building her company, creating employment opportunities, as well as contributing positively towards the country’s economic growth.
“The important thing is that; be deliberate about your development, be deliberate about your growth. That will take you forward because it doesn’t matter if it happens now or in 10 years. If you keep pushing and knocking on those doors, there are no boundaries that are too big enough,” she advises.
Gama says although her background reflects nothing about mining, her love for diamonds and curiosity for engineering is an integral part for her proclivity to the mining industry.
“I recall a career guidance agent who came through at our school, talking us through careers and I said I just want to get into an industry that brings me as close as possible to diamonds. That’s how I ended up in mining, and I’ve never looked back,” remarks Gama.
Gama acknowledges that the mining industry is still male dominated and highly challenging.
However, she says, her company, Khumba Iron Ore, has made it part of its mission and vision to create a conducive space, which affords equality and true inclusivity to all its employees.
“Working in a very male-dominated environment is extremely challenging on a daily basis. We are always facing different challenges, but as a woman in the industry, one thing that I’ve learned to navigate in the industry is to always ensure the environment is conducive for all of us.”
The mining engineer and businesswoman says the well-being of her staff members is top priority as the company benefits in return.
“The most important slogan that we stand for as Khumba is that we ensure that everyone goes home safe and well and comes to work and gives their best and their full potential,” she explains.
“…and we want that for everyone irrespective of gender or race.”
The 35-year-old says she is indebted to women organisations within the mining industry, which have granted her the capacity to work through hurdles in the sector.
“Through the Women in Mining Forums and Structures, I have been able to navigate how other women’s challenges have been able to influence the way they do their work,” she adds.
Gama says to be successful, young people should acquaint themselves with knowledge of the industries they are interested in.
“I think my biggest thing is that I love reading. Knowledge is key. To get to understand what is happening in the mining industry, you need to familiarise yourself with the conversation that are happening within mining. Be curious enough to ask questions and understand your industry’s culture,” says Gama.
Gama also advises young aspiring entrepreneurs to keep looking for opportunities, despite setbacks.
“Never take no for an answer. There is no such thing as a no. I’m standing here because someone said no to me, and then someone else said yes.”
Echoing Gama’s sentiments is the newly awarded Top Women Entrepreneur, Brenda Khumalo, who says passion and intention are key drivers of success in entrepreneurship.
Khumalo was hailed for her strong leadership skills and a unique eye for innovation.
“A few things I would advise people on is firstly whatever job you pursue should be what you love doing. Our jobs and careers take a lot of our time so it wouldn’t make sense if you are not doing what you love. Also make sure that you are really great at what you do from the email you send out to the interaction you have with others. That is your stamp and brand, so love it and make sure you are proud of it,” adds Khumalo.
