The Proteas have for a four-pronged seam attack for the opening Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead in Durban, starting today.
Captain, Temba Bavuma, returns to the Proteas set-up after recovering from injury and will form part of a lengthy batting line-up.
Towering all-rounder, Marco Jansen, and fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee, have been included in the playing 11, with the two last playing a Test for the Proteas in January against India. The two other seamers are the Lions duo of Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder.
Coach, Shukri Conrad, will also be banking on their lone spinner, Keshav Maharaj, to hold his own against the subcontinent spin maestros.
“If there is a need for a second spinner, we do have Aiden as well who can give us that opportunity,” Bavuma told reporters in a pre-match press conference yesterday.
“We feel that if it does spin, it will probably be at the end of the game also considering the weather. I think the seamers will come into play and we’re quite confident in our bowling pack.”
Sri Lanka are the only Asian team to have won a Test series against the Proteas in South Africa, having triumphed 2-0 back in 2019. Written by Ntsako Mkhari
